Angel Central Community Forest: Charity Partners

Planted & Enchanted

This year, all of our trees will be adopted back into the local community, giving them new life beyond Christmas!

Where are the trees going?

Islington Forest for Change

Islington Clean Air Parents (ICAP) is a community group campaigning to protect the health of children in the borough from toxic air pollution. This summer as part of the London Design Biennial’s Forest for Change installation, Somerset House became host to 200 trees, which ICAP successfully crowdfunded to permanently rehome. This community collaboration demonstrates how trees address climate change, reduce air pollution, increase greenery and boost physical and mental wellness.

Hugh Myddelton Primary School

We’re living in a time when artificial turf, rubber crumb and tarmac are the surfaces of choice for school play areas. Whilst this is a practical solution to the need for low-maintenance playgrounds, the environmental impact is – in the long term – indefensible. Hugh Myddelton is bucking the trend by planting a diverse range of real hedgerow plants around the Spa Green Nursery, to provide year-round wildlife habitats and a dense air pollution barrier between the play areas and the local roads.

King Square Gardens

Just south of the Angel Islington, King Square Gardens is designated as a Site of Local Importance to Nature Conservation. Recently redeveloped as part of a council strategy to help children live healthy, active and independent lives, the park includes a children’s play area with a large sand pit, interactive water play feature, and accessible children’s toilets.

Culpeper Community Garden

A green oasis in the midst of streets, estates and inner city bustle, Culpeper Community Garden is one of the most valued green public spaces in Islington. Culpeper is a beautiful public open space which is both a city park and an environmental community project. Managed by and for local people, it is an award winning project where people from all walks of life come together to appreciate and enhance their environment.

Love Not Landfill Pop-Up

Join us at Angel Central on the 11 – 14th November, 2021, where eco-fashion campaign Love Not Landfill returns with its pre-loved fashion pop-up. Sponsored this year by Vanish and Oxwash, Love Not Landfill’s concept store is bigger and better than ever. Featuring fashion forward items from charity shops curated by style-savvy influencers, Love Not Landfill is showcasing several incredible collections including…

Cancer Research UK collection x Shannon Alexandra

Crisis collection x Ismail Stewart

Oxfam collection x Nova Twins

Royal Trinity Hospice collection x The Monica Way

For the first time ever the pop-up will also feature a special Love Not Landfill collection curated by Jake Edwards. All clothes in this collection were donated to Love Not Landfill exclusive Bambi-designed clothes banks.

Each influencer has worked with their partner charity to carefully select up to 500 pieces from donations, which will be sold at the Love Not Landfill pop-up with all profits going straight to the charities. Expect designer labels you know and love at affordable prices, plus one-off gems – that is the beauty of pre-loved fashion.

Olivia Shaw from the Love Not Landfill campaign explains, “Don’t be fooled, the most sustainable clothes are the pieces you or someone else already own. The ‘buy it, wear it, throw it away’ fashion model is going out of fashion: rewear what you’ve got, donate or swap fashion and keep pieces in circulation. The trend of fast fashion brands “doing sustainability” with baby steps like recycling and conscious collections isn’t always as transparent as it needs to be, and very few fast fashion retailers are making changes fast and deep enough to have a meaningful impact. This is why we champion second-hand shopping.”

The Love Not Landfill pop-up shop is open from Thursday 11th November to Sunday 14th November at 1st Floor Angel Central.

Islington Greener Together Festival

Islington Council developed Vision 2030 as a roadmap for creating a net zero carbon Islington by 2030. After research identified Islington as one of the six London boroughs most at risk of the effects of climate change, the council launched its first major event on the 18th October, 2021.

The Islington Greener Together Festival aimed to engage with and galvanise those who live and work in Islington using a series of events to tackle the climate emergency. Not only did the festival raise awareness of the crisis, it also gave those in the community a voice in the process, and the opportunity to take community-led, community-owned action.

Angel Central worked with the council and several community groups to support the initiative, offering space within the centre for organisations. Events at the centre included the Electrical Repair Café, Textile Repair event with TRAID, Thanks For Trying Exhibition, My Wardrobe, My Way, and This is Energy.

The Angel Central team also completed their first volunteering day at Carfree Open Space on the 22nd October, in partnership with Islington Clean Air Parents. The team helped to develop the Islington Forest For Change, an area hoped one day to be a sanctuary for wildlife, with activities including litter picking, weeding, and planting bulbs and trees. This initiative is the first step in helping to store air pollutants, slow the movement of water and reduce the risks of flooding.
