MUJI At Angel Central: New Sustainability-Driven Concept Store

Over the past weeks, we’ve seen exciting refurbishments across Angel Central. We’re delighted to introduce MUJI’s new and improved green store, the first of its kind in the UK for the Japanese retailer. The new 2,624 sq ft store is now open with a range of exciting, sustainability-driven concepts.

Alongside the opening, MUJI also held their first Community Market in the Angel Central Piazza, an initiative aimed at bringing communities together. MUJI shined a spotlight on the small businesses, crafts people and charities to support what they do best.

The latest refurbishment features new concepts that are a key milestone for the brand. Here’s a selection of incredible new features that you do not want to miss at Angel Central!

REMUJI

In the store, you’ll find MUJI’s new local ‘Recycle & Repurpose’ Garment Capsule Collection. The collection is made up of garments collected from MUJI staff and customers, which are then re-dyed using 100% natural dyes for a second life.

RECYCLE AT MUJI

With sustainability at the forefront of their refurbishment, you can now return your unwanted MUJI PP Drawer, PET Bottles & Skincare containers and receive 10% off your next purchase. Get 20% off, when you return your unwanted MUJI garments.

LONDON-TO-GO

Connecting with the local community, MUJI’s new ‘London-to-Go’ Map celebrates and shines a light on the small businesses, sustainable projects, arts & craft makers, charities and many more initiatives in Islington.

THE ARCHWAY PLANTER

MUJI would like to introduce you to The Archway Planter, a neighbourhood houseplant and botanical boutique. Based in a humble market stall in Holloway, North London, they offer a curated range of exotic indoor plants alongside vintage and contemporary planters. MUJI have incorporated the greenery & hanging displays features into their new Islington store to improve the environment.

Established in 2020 at Tiff’s home, The Archway Planter grew out of a love and passion for learning more about house plants as a whole. Tiff saw a shared interest amongst many plant parents and decided to open up a physical space to further grow this element of discovery in relation to the natural world around us. Tiff will be in the MUJI Islington store from the until 2nd October! Come in-store to check out the selection of easy-care and affordable selection of plants.

WATER REFILL STATION

Refill your water bottle for free. The machine displays the number of bottles that have been refilled, which helps to minimise the use of single-use plastic bottles.

LOCAL FUNDRAISING WITH HUGH MYDDELTON SCHOOL

MUJI is supporting Hugh Myddelton Primary School (8 mins walk from the Islington store) by donating the profits from the sales of the ‘Neighbourhood’ bags back to the school to help raise funds for various Art projects. Artworks in the new store windows are by children aged 5 – 11 years old.

One of the lovely participants, Alex, visited the Islington store and was excited to find his artwork. Alex said, “There is the Shard, a rainbow, bus, house, the park, and ‘London is the best!'”. The limited-edition MyBags are priced at just £3.50 each, and are exclusively sold in the MUJI Angel Central Store.

MUJI UK managing director David Brice said: “Our store at Angel Central is incredibly important to us. We trade so well here, and it’s a destination that supports its local community, so we knew our Angel Central store would be the perfect place to begin rolling out this refurbishment.

We have a great relationship with the Islington community, and CBRE IM have worked collaboratively with us to support our re-fit and community market plans. We’re excited to see this store continue to thrive and make sustainable choices more accessible for consumers.”

Haircuts 4 Homeless Launches Exhibition at Angel Central

Angel Central is delighted to play host to a new exhibition by Haircuts4Homeless for three consecutive weekends from 1st September until 18th September.

Haircuts4Homeless, the registered charity set up by veteran hairdresser Stewart Roberts has teamed up with Angel Central to showcase beautiful portrait photographs and intimate quotes from the new ‘Hear Me, See Me‘ book. In a collaboration which saw Stewart team up with photographer, Jack Eames, and session hairstylist, Leigh Keates, the photographic book documents clients’ spoken stories over the past three years.

Inspired by the actions of hairdressers cutting hair for the homeless in various parts of the world, Stewart set out not only to do this himself, but to build a community of skilled hairdresser volunteers who give their time free of charge to assist. Now their work will take up a new temporary residence at Angel Central, Islington. ‘Hear Me, See Me‘ will be available to buy at the exhibition.

The exhibition aims to raise awareness of the charity, humanising the face of homelessness by challenging stigmas and stereotypes via honest, thought-provoking imagery and words to acknowledge that the smallest of actions can have the greatest effect.

Haircuts4Homeless Founder, Stewart Roberts commented: “Over the past three years we’ve met so many people and heard so many different stories, to be able to partner with Angel Central and put these stories on display to the public and raise awareness of the work that we do is something I’m really proud of. For us this is not just an exhibition, it’s not just a book or a haircut, we’re a community that creates a space for wellbeing and acceptance and I’m delighted to be able to share the stories of the people that we’ve worked with over the years.”

Adam Cummins, Centre Manager, Angel central said: “The work that Stewart and the team has done at Haircuts4Homeless is something that they should all be extremely proud of. I’m delighted that we’re able to host their exhibition and bring something new to Angel central for our visitors.”

The Haircuts4Homeless exhibition will open to the public on Friday 2nd September and run every Friday to Sunday until the 18th of September.

Food Wave Project: Pop-Up By ReLondon At Angel Central

From Friday 8th – Sunday 10th July, we’re hosting a pop-up run by ReLondon to educate and inspire Londoners to reduce waste and spread the word about the impact that food waste has on the planet. Expect a range of events from cookery workshops to stalls and competitions, all designed to empower you to enjoy a more sustainable approached to buying, storing, eating – and even growing – your food.

After a huge drop in household food waste during the pandemic, food waste has now shot back up to 2018 levels (WRAP data), and as part of a collaboration with surplus food app and social impact company, Too Good to Go, two giant sculptures will be on display at Angel Central, to bring attention to the impact that waste has on the environment.

Arielle Vetro, ReLondon’s campaign manager for Food Wave, commented: “The Food Wave campaign is all about encouraging a new generation of food activists, highlighting the connection between the way we grow, eat and throw away our food, and its impact on the planet. We can’t wait to launch the pop-up in Islington as it will give us the chance to have conversations with young north Londoners and find out how they’re feeling about the climate crisis, and what they know about how food directly affects it.”
