Angel Central Shopping Centre is always buzzing with activity, and the Bank Holiday weekend is no exception.

Get growing with Islington’s beloved gardening competition Islington in Bloom 2023, one of the highlights of the weekend! Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting out, this is your chance to contribute to a cleaner, greener, and healthier borough. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the competition and it’s going to be grander than ever before. You don’t need any experience or even a garden to participate – everyone is welcome to join in on the green-thumb action!

We want Islington to be cleaner, greener, and healthier, and our gardening competition is a great way for us to reimagine our shared spaces together and make this happen. Gardening has many benefits for people and the environment:

·It raises our spirits by making our shared spaces more beautiful.
·It makes Islington more attractive to pollinators and other wildlife.
·It supports biodiversity and helps protect our environment.
·It brings people together and is great for health and wellbeing.
·It’s fun!

There are fantastic prizes to be won:

To find out more about this years competition, meet the judges and get advice on what makes a great entry, come along to Angel Central on Saturday 8th April 11am – 2pm where we’ll be sowing seeds, potting plants, offering advice and celebrating our anniversary.

Puppy Yoga

The fun doesn’t stop there, from Friday through to Monday, you can experience the ultimate puppy experience! You will be joined by a litter of puppies who are all getting ready to venture off to their new homes. Each puppy yoga class will start off with puppy cuddles and individual photo opportunities! You will then carry on with some gentle yoga movements and breaks. The class will finish off with everyone on their backs lying down on their yoga mat with a puppy placed on their tummy for extra relaxation.

Puppy yoga is beneficial for the puppies as it allows them to socialise with new people in different environments, creating less separation anxiety when they officially go off to the new homes. From a wellness perspective, it is great for attendees too as it allows you to take a moment out of the day to unwind and relax from the everyday stresses of work and life.

Tickets are released every Thursday for the following weekend. Please check Puppy Yoga London’s website each week as they may release tickets at different times each week. It’s that time of year again, and what a year it has been! We’ve gone from lockdown closures to grand reopenings, and seen Angel Central transformed with the completion of our refurbishment works back in March. July’s Summer Fête saw us throw the big party we had all been waiting for, thanking everyone for their efforts over two difficult years, and welcoming the local Islington community into a new space we can all call home.

Now we’re looking ahead to Christmas and the New Year beyond, with plenty to look forward to and shout about. Our Sustainable Market features a selection of London-based ethical and sustainable businesses, the best in local crafters and makers, all with their unique sustainable spin, and all available in one place at Angel Central.

Continuing our proudly-held sustainability mission, the centrepiece of this year’s Christmas decorations is our enchanted Community Forest throughout the plaza. In January each tree will be adopted and re-homed by a local Islington community group, proving each has a life beyond Christmas.

We’ve also partnered with Gaydio, the UK’s first LGBTQ+ FM radio service, and will feature as they bring the big tunes and bigger vibes throughout the festive season.

All that is the backdrop to our amazing choice of stores, and ever-growing food and dining lineup – adding up to an unmissable Christmas shopping experience. The only thing left to do is write that letter to Santa!

Mental Health Awareness Week 2021 – Celebrating Nature

The pandemic has seen so many people experience problems with their mental health or found themselves working to support friends and loved ones who are feeling the stress, pressure and uncertainty of lives that have been upended. This May’s Mental Health Awareness Week is the perfect chance to speak out, raise awareness, and help do something positive and important for the cause.

The benefits of the outdoors and exercise on health and wellness have long been established, but with a year of lockdown now behind us, many more have embraced it as support for their mental health. 

Thankfully, Islington boasts some of the best parks, scenery and walking spots in London, and we’re encouraging our locals and visitors from further afield to get out there and get active. Here are just a few potential stops to visit:

  1. BARNARD PARK

Barnard Park is easily accessible to visitors looking for green space with different amenities. To those with children, the park offers a One O’clock Club on a drop-in basis for those with children aged birth to five and the club is also available to rent for children’s parties.

  1. HIGHBURY FIELDS

At 29 hectares, Highbury Fields is Islington’s largest open space and the ultimate space for a lunchtime walk. On the edge of the park you’ll find  Highbury Leisure Centre which boasts two swimming pools and if that’s not enough, the park also has an amazing history, it is home to the Boer War memorial which was erected in 1905.

  1. CALEDONIAN PARK

Another one of our favourites is Caledonian Park which is home to a 155ft high Grade II listed Clock Tower which offers a beautiful viewing platform for panoramic views of north London and the City.  Caledonian park is also the perfect picnic spot for friends and families to enjoy with its flower and nature gardens, a small orchard and woodland area.

  1. DISCOVERING ISLINGTON

The full walk is about 7km (4 miles) long and takes about two to three hours to complete. You can kick off your walk at Highbury & Islington underground station and end it with a nice meal or a little bit of retail therapy at Angel Central. As mentioned by the London Garden Trust, there are numerous things you can explore during your walk. The many green spaces have always been the perfect spots for city-dwellers with its clean air and freshwater spas. In the early 19th century once more houses were needed the country estates were broken up and the second wave of London’s network of residential gardens took shape.

  1. ISLINGTON CANAL WALK

The Regent’s Canal is 9 miles long and the numerous pubs, cafes and restaurants along the way make it the perfect walk for a weekend.. You can start your walk at the London Canal Museum to prepare yourself for what you are about to see and on the way pause at City Road Basin. This is where you can take boat trips, go fishing or simply just relax and watch the world go by.
