Activism in Islington

With Activism and initiatives growing throughout the local area, Islington is at the forefront of climate change action.

The current global circumstances show the importance of how we all must care for our world and each other. Here are a few ways our locals are making a difference.

Tackling the climate emergancy

Islington Council declared a climate emergency in June 2019, recognising the need to drastically reduce carbon emissions in the borough. A pledge was made to work towards being a net zero borough by 2030.

Gen-Z want to be heard!

Hundreds of schoolchildren gathered in 2019 outside Islington town hall for the global climate strike. Eleven schools from across Islington met to demand immediate action on climate change. Campaigners called for the council to use 100 per cent renewable energy.

Award-Winning Initiatives

The Camden Climate Change Alliance and Islington Sustainable Energy Partnership led the first ever cross-borough sustainability awards. The first of its kind cross-borough event brought together organisations from across Camden and Islington, with progress by local businesses in recycling, air quality and carbon reduction all recognised.

Islington Council is working towards a net zero carbon target in the borough by 2030.

Our iconic Angel Wings have taken flight!

YOU RAISE ME UP

It may have been a soar point for local residents, but there’s no need to get into a flap over the future of Angel Central’s wings sculpture. Far from light as a feather, the 12-tonne, 15m angel wing sculpture has been lifted by 3.5m as part of the £16m project, which is due to be completed by the autumn.

It will sit atop a new footbridge and al fresco dining area, having been set in place by a team from RED Construction.

The investment in the redevelopment of Angel Central has been a long-term plan to provide the local community with a reimagined space and enhanced offer that includes more restaurants, outdoor seating and leisure – all building on the existing strong mix within the scheme such as O2 Academy, Vue Cinema and Frame.

Graham Sturge, managing director of Farringdon-based RED Construction, said:

“The raising of the wings was one of the key milestones for this extensive refurbishment project at Angel Central. Our expert team on site worked together, utilising their years of experience and skill, to safely manoeuvre this iconic sculpture to its newly raised position. We had to work within a limited space but the innovative technique we used ensured we delivered this within our short time frame of only 5 days – this is an intricate phase of the project successfully completed”.
