Away Fans Guide To Islington

North London plays host to two professional clubs, Arsenal and Tottenham. Despite the fact that neither of the clubs lose at home very often — most football fans round the country can admit they’d love to visit the north of the capital for an away game!

Spurs are currently playing their home games at Wembley and the “new” White Hart Lane isn’t completely finished. We suspect the new stadium is set to be opened around the start of the 2018-19 season, and this means that two North London clubs will have two of the most advanced stadiums in the whole country.

Despite us being a few miles away from the home of Spurs, thousands of fans per year will base themselves in Islington prior to and after attending the game.

So in preparation for the start of the 2018-19 Premier League season, Angel Central have provided you with a number of pointers on how to make your away day an enjoyable experience!

How To Get Here

As most football fans will know, driving to an away game can be a nightmare. The traffic, parking and motorway closures can make an already stressful journey even more painful.

Luckily, London as a whole has one of the best underground train services in the whole of Europe, which makes getting from London Euston to Highbury & Islington a breeze — you just need to get on the Victoria line and you should be there within 10 minutes, then it’s just a short walk to the Emirates.

The closest train station to White Hart Lane, funnily enough is White Hart Lane, and you get there by taking a trip on the Victoria line to Seven Sisters and then getting the overground train to White Hart Lane.

Obviously if you prefer getting the coach or a minibus, then this is just as easy especially with the Emirates and the “new” White Hart Lane having ample coach parking. Just make sure the bus has access to a toilet.

Where To Eat

Are you driving down to the match or just looking to try some tasty grub before kick-off?

Before the Emirates Stadium was opened, the Arsenal faithful would flock to Highbury and most of them will still be able to recall the smell of onions and cheap burgers frying merrily away outside the ground.

Sure the smell might get you, but sometimes a hot-dog from a burger van just won’t make the cut. If you are looking for something less greasy, then there are a number of different restaurants located in Angel Central.

Do you fancy a pre-match pizza? Then Bella Italia would be perfect for you!

We are also home to Gourmet Burger Kitchen, so if you’re looking to get your hands on a delicious burger which has been crafted with the freshest ingredients, make sure you book a table online in advance as they can get quite busy on a Saturday afternoon.

Where To Stay

Maybe you’re visiting from abroad, or you just fancy a night out in the capital — we can assure you that Islington is home to some of the nicest budget hotels in London.

Probably the most popular with away fans is the Premier Inn “London Angel Islington” hotel. If you stay here you know you are within easy reach of the action as it is just a few minutes away from the shopping central.

Just up the road is the independent Islington Inn. This Asian-themed, boutique hotel is highly recommended if you are looking for a budget base not too far from the Emirates.

Where To Drink

We couldn’t write a guide about going to the match without mentioning the best pubs in Islington – luckily enough away fans will be blessed with an excellent range of drinking establishments.

One of the most popular boozers in Islington is The Famous Cock Tavern, this is convenient for away fans as it’s just a stones throw away from Highbury & Islington station.

Another popular choice with away fans is The Tollington Arms, although it is quite difficult to find it’s definitely worth it! A must if you want to drink real ale and eat tasty food.
